Mathematics, Physics no longer mandatory for engineering entry
According to new norms released by our AICTE- All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) for 2021-22, Maths and Physics in Class 12 will not be mandatory for Prospective engineering students.
Only those students opted Physics and Maths in class 12 were eligible to apply for B.E. and B.Tech programmes. Chemistry was removed as a mandatory requirement in 2010.
Students only need to score 45% in any three subjects from a list of 14 in order to get into engineering.
List of 14 Subjects:
1. Physics,
2. Mathematics,
3. Chemistry,
4. Computer Science,
5. Electronics,
6. Information Technology,
7. Biology,
8. Informatics Practices,
9. Biotechnology,
10. Agriculture,
11. technical vocational subject,
12. Engineering Graphics,
13. Business Studies and
14. Entrepreneurship.
The clarification by Anil Sahasrabudhe came following news reports about Physics and Mathematics no longer being compulsory for studying engineering as per the approval handbook for 2021-22 issued by the AICTE.
He also mentioned that "Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics will continue to be important subjects for certain streams of engineering like mechanical engineering, it's not that these subjects will lose their relevance. However, for streams like Textile Engineering, Agriculture or maybe Biotechnology, students will have an option of not studying the three subjects compulsorily in class 12 and make up for them through bridge courses later".
The New change:
According to Sahasrabudhe, "the new Approval Process Handbook 2021-22 has been changed to remove the restrictions of the previous rules in case there are states or universities that want to open up on the lines of the NEP". "There was a very classic case which came up this year during admission into an Agricultural Engineering or Agricultural Technology course where Physics, Chemistry & Maths are mandatory. Now, in open schooling and the CBSE, there are subjects like Agricultural Chemistry. However, these institutes are only accepting pure chemistry,"said Sahasrabudhe.
Let's wait for the further updates!!!
