COLDEST HIGH-ALTITUDE AND WINDIEST CONTINENT - ANTARCTICA
Antarctica is Earth's southernmost continent and the last region on Earth to be discovered. There are many interesting facts about Antarctica that are not known to us. Let's get to know them one by one..
• The existence of Antarctica was completely unknown until the continent was first spotted in 1820. 20 years later that it was confirmed to be a continent and not just a group of islands.
• Antarctica, the fifth-largest continent in the world, is also known as the Cold Desert.
• It is a sacred land with 90% freshwater. It is the coldest high-altitude and windiest continent on earth. Temperatures here range from -93.2 degrees Celsius to 14.5 degrees Celsius. The highest temperature noted is 14.5 degrees Celsius.
• Felicity Austin, a British researcher, has been skiing around much of Antarctica without any vehicles, covering a distance of 1744 kilometers in just 59 days. The cold region of Antarctica is also rich in volcanoes. The volcano, which is very close to the area where the American Research Center is located, erupts into marble.
• Antarctica is 1.3 times larger than the European continent, discovered by the Russians in 1720.
• 99% frozen country and one percent and liquid. This is a country without reptiles. The biggest part of Antarctica is considered to be owned by Australians.
• Antarctica's largest Sanddune is 230 feet high and more than 650 feet wide and is located in the McMurdo Dry Valleys.
• The Antarctic Ice Sheet dominates the region. It is the largest single piece of ice on Earth. This ice sheet even extends beyond the continent when snow and ice are at their most extreme.
• The main thickness of ice on Antarctica is over 7,000 feet there is no population in Antarctica. Since it is an isolated Island and due to the harsh climate, it is difficult for humans to live in.
• There are no residents in Antarctica there are many secret lakes thascientists have drilled deep below the thick glacial ice and found liquid lakes the Transantarctic mountains divide the continent into eastern and western regions surrounding this mountain there are whales seals sea birds Penguin and other animals who have their habitats.
• The continent's active volcano Mount Erebus is the one and only volcano on your which has a molten lava lake in its crater. A few of these summits reach altitudes of more than 4,500 meters.
• There are no icebergs like the Iceberg in Antarctica you would have never seen such an Iceberg anywhere these floating structures come in all shapes and sizes you will be amazed at the sight of dozens of Iceberg surrounded by you on all sides.
• As mentioned already Antarctica is the windiest place on earth the scientist have reported that the speed of wind reached up to 200 mph. The largest ice shelf that has been ever discovered is the Ross ice shelf with a main landmass of 510000 kilometers square. In January of 1979, Emile Marco Palm became the first-ever human to be born in Antarctica. Antarctica experiences the winter season throughout the year the vernal Equinox that is it remains dark throughout the winter season and the sun never sets in Antarctica during the summer season.
• Deep Lake is so salty that it doesn't freeze even at the low temperature of -15 degrees celsius. Antarctica is considered to be a dessert that is the average annual rainfall in the south pole for the past 30 years is just 10 mm. It contains metallurgical wonders like diamond dust Diamond dust is made of tiny ice crystals that precipitate out of the humid area it's like an icy fog.
• There are thousands of species of fungi 700 species of algae and 20 species of macrofungi 9000 known species of animals 46 species of birds 235 species in the Antarctic Ocean such as sea cucumber sea snail sea birds.
• Every December the Antarctic Ice Marathon is held in Antarctica, about 100 miles inland. This marathon is the only footrace held in this continent, but not the only race. The marked course is almost 27 miles in length, the temperatures average around minus 20 degrees Celsius. The actual running is done over a single day, during which a half marathon is also held.
• Each year, scientists from 28 nations conduct experiments not reproducible in any other place in the world. In the summer more than 4,000 scientists operate research stations; decreases to just over 1,000 in the winter. McMurdo Station, which is the largest research station in Antarctica, is capable of housing more than 1,000 scientists, visitors, and tourists.
• Meteorites from Antarctica are an important area of study of material formed early in the solar system. The first meteorite was found in 1912 and named the Adelie Land meteorite. In 1969, a Japanese expedition discovered nine meteorites.
• Contestants are housed together, provided with food and water, and the entry price even covers the flight to and from Chile. Usually, Chile is the start point.
• There is a waterfall that is not only flowing for the majority of the year but it also looks like it is made out of the blood. The coloration of its water has stained the ice and the rocks around the fall, making the area appear to be permanently bathed in red.
• Lake Vostok is a pristine freshwater lake buried beneath 2.5 miles (3.7 kilometers) of solid ice. It is about the size of Lake Ontario and is the largest of the more than 200 liquid lakes. The highest point on Antarctica is the Vinson Massif at 16,362 feet.
• The male Emperor penguin is the only warm-blooded animal that remains on the Antarctic continent through the winter. It stays to nest on the single egg laid by its mate (the female spends nine weeks at sea and returns in time for the egg to hatch).
• The coldest temperature ever recorded on Earth was minus 128.56 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 89.2 degrees Celsius), registered on July 21, 1983, at Antarctica's Vostok station.
