Seven Wonder Of The World
Great Wall of China:
The Chinese call the Great Wall “Chang Cheng,” which literally means “Long Wall.” And calling it “long” may be an understatement.
After a five-year survey, Chinese authorities in 2012 concluded that the Great Wall measures a total of 21,196.18 km. It starts from the eastern coast and stretches into the far western deserts, winding through 404 towns in 15 provincial regions across northern and central China.
The Great Wall was declared as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2007. UNESCO acknowledged it as the largest man-made structure on Earth.
The wall is made out of a variety of materials, including stone, brick, rammed earth, and wood. Individual walls were built as early as the 3rd Century BCE; however, it was during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644 CE) that the Great Wall truly flourished. Rulers from that period built and fortified structures stretching nearly 9,000km. The majority of the existing walls date back to the Ming Dynasty.
Now, it is up to the Chinese government, NGOs, as well as individuals to conserve their national pride.
Chichén Itzá:
Chichen Itza is one of the “New 7 Wonders of the World” due to its large concentration of culturally-significant, ancient manmade wonders and its placing in the top 7 of all nominees during international voting.
In 2000, the New7Wonders campaign set out to choose the New 7 Wonders of the World. These “New 7 Wonders” were to be nominated and decided by international vote to reflect a more global picture of ancient humanity’s most notable structures.
With over 100 million votes cast, Chichen Itza was chosen as one of the New 7 Wonders of the World—and it’s really no secret why. As one of the largest and best-preserved archaeological sites in the world, Chichen Itza is home to a myriad of ancient Mayan marvels and rich cultural histories cherished by travelers across the globe.
Taj Mahal:
Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, lost his wife Mumtaz Mahal on June 17, 1631. He was inconsolable and envisaged a memorial that would befit his love.
Today, the Taj Mahal is listed as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. But, this magnificent white marbled mausoleum has its own story to tell. It is the final resting place of Arjuman Banu, also know as Mumtaz Mahal. The construction of the mausoleum began in 1632 and was completed in 1648. This tomb is made of white marble and is a showpiece of Mughal architecture. It is supposed to represent Shah Jehan’s vision of Mumtaz Mahal’s home in paradise. The architecture of the Taj Mahal combines elements of Islamic, Indian, Persian, Ottoman and Turkish styles of art. The principal architect of the Taj Mahal was Ahmed Shah Lahauri and thousands of artisans and craftsmen were employed during the construction of this monument. It is believed that the Taj Mahal was constructed in such a way that the white marble reflects the sky. So, the monument changes its colours during the day. Early morning the Taj appears pinkish, milky white at noon, a sparkling golden at sunset and shimmering silver in the moonlight.
Colosseum:
Construction of the Colosseum took eight years and was financed with plunder taken from Jerusalem.
The Colosseum, also called the Amphitheatrum Flavium, was opened by emperor Titus with games and festivities that lasted 100 days and cost the lives of 5,000 animals.
The main purpose of the Colosseum in Rome was to entertain the people – and thereby increase the popularity of the emperor – with gladiator battles, sometimes including wild animals, such as elephants and tigers.
It was common for animal fights to be held in the mornings by the ‘bestiarii’.
During intermissions, convicted criminals were often thrown to the wild animals.
Gladiator battles were held in the afternoons.
